Gametogenesis and nucleotypic effects in the tetraploid red vizcacha rat, Tympanoctomys barrerae (Rodentia, Octodontidae) Biol. Res.
GALLARDO,MILTON H; GARRIDO,ORLANDO; BAHAMONDE,RAÚL; GONZÁLEZ,MARCELO.
Nucleotypic effects link DNA content with nuclear size and cell dimensions of reproductive cells in polyploid organisms. We studied the gametogenesis of the allotetraploid rodent Tympanoctomys barrerae, aiming to determine these effects in reproductive cells. The species' cofamily members, Octodon degus and Spalacopus cyanus were used as control. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis in T. barrerae follows the pattern of differentiation and sequence of events of the control species, but varied nucleotypic effects were observed. Exceedingly large, spatulated spermatozoa with a submedially attached flagellum are characteristic of male T. barrerae. The diameter of the nuclei of primordial and growing follicles as well as those of the Graaff follicles, of the...

Polyploid fish and shellfish: Production, biology and applications to aquaculture for performance improvement and genetic containment ArchiMer
Piferrer, Francesc; Beaumont, Andy; Falguiere, Jean-claude; Flajshans, Martin; Haffray, Pierrick; Colombo, Lorenzo.
Polyploids can be defined as organisms with one or more additional chromosome sets with respect to the number most frequently found in nature for a given species. Triploids, organisms with three sets of homologous chromosomes, are found spontaneously in both wild and cultured populations and can be easily induced in many commercially relevant species of fish and shellfish. The major consequence of triploidy is gonadal sterility, which is of advantage in the aquaculture of molluscs since it can result in superior growth. In fish, the induction of triploidy is mainly used to avoid problems associated with sexual maturation such as lower growth rates, increased incidence of diseases and deterioration of the organoleptic properties. Triploidy can also be used...

Polyploidy in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. II. Chemical induction of tetraploid embryos ArchiMer
Diter, Alain; Dufy, Christian.
Tetraploidy was induced in embryos of Ruditapes philippinarum by treating the eggs with cytochalasin B. (CB). Two treatment times were found to be effective in inducing tetraplidy : 0 to 10 minutes after insemination (before formation of the first polar body) and 45 minutes after insemination (just before the first cleavage). Treatments, started 5 and 45 minutes after insemination, produced 64.4 ± 7.8% and 28.3 ± 2.3% tetraploid embrios, respectively, after 6 hours (on the average over 3 experiments). However, no tetraploids were detected in 4-month-old spat. Sperm entry delayed by the CB could be involved in induction of tetraploidy by early treatment.

Tetraploidía en Ceratophrys (Anura, Leptodactylidae), análisis del registro fósil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mercadal de Barrio,Isabel T.; Barrio,Alfonso.
It has been confirmed the existence of the tetraploid counterpart of the genus Ceratophrys Wied, 1824 (extint at the present time) in Argentina and Brazil since the Pliocene, and the apparition of the octaploidy in the Upper Pleistocene - Holocene. Fossil material of the diploid form, distinctive of the Chacoan District, has been reported from the horizons of the Montehermosense Formation in south-east of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The coexistence of diploid-tetraploid and tetraploid-octaploid forms in the same province was documented.
